We treat cognition by focusing on cognitive-communication skills such as attention, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, organization, and executive functioning. We begin with a thorough assessment using standardized tests, observations, and interviews to identify each client’s unique challenges. Based on this, we develop personalized goals aimed at improving real-life functioning. Our treatment includes direct cognitive training to strengthen specific skills like memory and attention, as well as teaching compensatory strategies such as using planners, alarms, and memory aids to help manage difficulties. We also teach metacognitive strategies to increase clients’ awareness of their thinking, help them monitor their performance, and use self-correction techniques through routines like “goal-plan-do-review.” We incorporate functional, everyday tasks—such as cooking or managing appointments—to build independence. Additionally, we provide education and training for caregivers to support cognitive-communication needs outside of therapy. Our approach benefits individuals with conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, dementia, ADHD, autism, and other neurological or developmental disorders.
